Cyril of Alexandria On the Unity of Christ
Rev. Brian L. Kachelmeier
In this lecture we continue our discussion on Christology in light of St. Cyril’s text On the Unity of Christ. While the Nestorians falsely taught that the Only-Begotten Son of God assumed a man, Cyril correctly taught that the Only-Begotten Son of God became man. In other words, the Nestorians confessed that the Son of God was conjoined or connect to the man Jesus. Thus, wherever the Son of God went, the man Jesus followed. Cyril notes thus silliness of such thinking. Instead, Cyril confessed that the Son of God assumed the human nature. After all, Jesus was crucified because He claimed to be the Son of God Himself. Jesus did not claim to be connected or conjoined to the Son of God.
